Aloha

My name is Micah Yamanaka.

a little about me…

I was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii.

I’ve been surrounded by storytellers my whole life, my father being such one. He told his stories through the works of his hands; growing up it seemed like he could make anything that he put his mind to. When he was a teenager he taught himself how to restore a Model T, and even built his first house. He picked up his brothers camera as a young man and started documenting weddings soon after. He took a beginners ceramic’s class as an adult and soon ran out of assignments; only to find himself having sculpted a bust of king Kalakaua, which is on display on Oahu till this day.

My grandfather used the medium of photography to document his time in the Korean War, and found his love in drawing and painting.

Its hard not to mention how big of an influence my sister, Asia has been in my photographic journey, if it wasn’t for her inspiring me long before I ever picked up a camera, I don’t know if I would have stuck around long enough to truly fall in love with this art form like I have today.

I found early in childhood that I had a passion for story telling, and it didn’t not matter which form that story took; whether it be written in poetry, film making, sculpting, or photography; I’m not saying any of it was actually good at the time, but I enjoyed making it.

My passion has always been to help others see the world the way I do, in all of its beauty, and all of its flaws.

What can you expect?

If you read any of that nonsense above, you’ll have an idea of my love for storytelling, and if having your story documented and told is something that interests you then look no further.

I’m not one for unnatural poses and photoshoping, I’m much more interested in capturing the moment, rather than ‘creating’ the moment.

Take a look at my portfolio, and see if we both appreciate a similar style, if so get in touch with me and lets shoot!

TRAVEL?

I am based in  Hawaii, but let me know where you are located, and we can see if something can be worked out.

I am always open to traveling, so don't be afraid to ask.
